Smoke detectors save lives, but only if they are properly installed and functioning. Most fire fatalities happen in homes without working smoke detectors.
SMOKE ALARM FACTS: The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) estimates more than 94 percent of North American homes have at least one smoke alarm. But consider this fact: There are more homes with smoke alarms that don't work, than homes without any alarms. These poorly maintained units create a false sense of security for residents.
Installation - Wall-mounted alarms should be installed so the top is 6 to 12 inches from the ceiling. - Ceiling-mounted units should be installed at least 6 inches from any wall. - If a room has a vaulted ceiling, mount the alarm at or near the ceiling's highest point. - In stairways with no doors at the top or bottom, position alarms in the path smoke would follow up the stairwell. - Mount alarms at the bottom of closed stairways. Dead air trapped near the door at the top of a stairway could prevent smoke from reaching an alarm located at the top. - Don't install an alarm too close to windows, doors, forced-air registers, or ceiling fans where drafts could interfere with the detector's operation.
Test When was the last time you heard your smoke alarm? Battery-operated alarms should be tested once a month to make certain they are working. Chirping smoke detectors are typically a sign of a low and/or dead battery. Check and replace all batteries as recommended.
Change Replace the batteries in your smoke detectors twice a year. It is recommended that you do this when you change your clocks to Daylight Savings Time.
Cleaning Follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning your smoke alarms. Debris and dust can generally be removed by using a vacuum cleaner attachment. Never paint any part of a smoke alarm. Once your smoke alarms are up and running, make sure everyone in the household is familiar with the sound of the alarms.
Replace Replace your smoke detector every ten years. After ten years, your smoke detector will have been working consecutively for 87,000 hours. No other appliance in your home works this long. If you do not know how old your smoke detector is, or if it is ten years or older, replace it as soon as possible.
